Chapter Thirteen

I wake up the next morning with a text from my mom informing me she’s swinging by this evening to have me sign my tax information for her to send off for my tax returns. I debate telling her about Brooklyn. It plays on my mind all day during classes.

The phone rings promptly at five after class.

“Mom?”

“Hello, dear. Your father and I are downtown at Dusty’s Steakhouse. We have reservations for the three of us. Come meet us, honey.”

Panic and fear hit me. This is so not happening. Oh, fuck. I wonder if Brooklyn is working tonight. God, please no.

“Okay, I’m on my way.” I feel like I can’t swallow. There’s a huge lump in my throat. My heart is thrumming in my chest out of control. Sweat beads on my upper lip. Calm down. Just breathe. Everything will be okay.

I wear my hair down for Brooklyn. Before heading out the door, I check my reflection in the mirror making sure I look my best. My pulse is racing a million beats per minute as I leave the parking lot blasting music. I still have a smile. I smile every time I think about her.

I finally find a parking spot after riding up and down the crowded streets for over ten minutes.

The phone rings. “Where are you, dear?”

Balling my fingers into a clenching tight fist, I try to control myself from going ape shit on her. “I’m on my way, Mom. Traffic is crazy here.”

I glance around for Brooklyn’s motorcycle. I don’t see any sign of it, but that doesn’t mean anything.

As I enter the restaurant, I give my name to the hostess. She leads me in the direction of my parents. They already have empty wine glasses. Who knows how many drinks they’ve already had. I gaze around at the wait staff deciding if I really want Brooklyn to be here or not. I don’t see any sign of her.

I take a seat. “Hello, dear. Here are your tax forms you need to sign for us.” She shoves them in my face. “Sign here, dear.”

I’m embarrassed. She treats me like I’m a child, telling me where to sign and speaking so loudly. I almost lose my shit. I mean I just sat down and haven’t said a word yet.

Gritting my teeth, I mutter, “Okay.” I sign them and hand the papers back to her.

“There, that wasn’t so hard, was it? Oh, here comes the waitress.”

Pressing my short nails into my thigh to keep me from saying something out of line, I count to three calming myself. Within seconds, all hell breaks lose. All the blood drains from my face. I look up and see my new girlfriend standing in front of my parents. I gawk, speechless and unprepared for this moment. Fuck my life.

Brooklyn smiles, and I grin. I’m dying. I fear what my parents think of her. This is one hell of a way to meet. I can only imagine the judgment and remarks as soon as she walks away.
